Hot Tub Therapy - The False Fever

Hot Tub Therapy – The “False Fever”

Cold & flu season brings mixed feelings to a lot of us. The idea of being sick for a few weeks doesn’t really make us feel good about the cooler weather showing up. Body aches, congestion, sore throats and trouble sleeping are awful ways to spend your time…especially around the holidays!

Viruses cause colds and flus, so antibodies are ineffective. With many alternative medicines out there it is difficult to find a remedy that actually works. Typically you know the exact day that you come down with something and run to the nearest drug store to get your over the counter drugs to help relieve the symptoms or you make your favorite homemade chicken soup. Well did you know that your hot tub may be one of the best tools to help relieve cold and flu symptoms? Well it’s true! In fact using your hot tub more may decrease the duration of your cold. Here’s how…

The fever you experience during a cold or flu is one of your body’s natural defense mechanisms to rid your system of the virus. Heat puts the body into an artificial fever state, otherwise known as hyperthermia, so this “false fever” stimulates the immune system resulting in an increased production of disease fighting white blood cells and antibodies. Sitting in your hot tub at the highest safest level, about 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and soaking for about 30 minutes will raise your body temperature creating a “false fever” and will help to kill the virus. A few extra trips to the hot tub can also relieve sinus congestions from colds or allergies, and the steam from the hot tub helps clear up congestion especially when used with a eucalyptus fragrance.

So I guess it’s not true what they say; getting in to hot water isn’t always that bad!
